Famous for its full-bodied and spicy red wines, the Szekszárd wine region is one of Hungary’s oldest red-wine-growing areas. Vine cultivation in the region dates back more than 2,000 years, with the Celts being the first to plant vineyards. The best-known grape of Szekszárd is Kadarka, which, despite not being the most widely planted variety, has become the region’s flagship. Kadarka plays a crucial role in the 'Bull's Blood of Szekszárd' (Szekszárdi Bikavér), the southern counterpart of the renowned Bull’s Blood of Eger. Thanks to Kadarka, the Szekszárd blend is notably spicier. Like the Villány region, Szekszárd is situated in southern Hungary, where long, hot summers and mild winters create ideal conditions for red grape varieties.
